A Report On E-C Translation Of Excerpts From Industries Without Smokestacks:Industrialization In Africa Reconsidered

China and Africa have strong traditional friendship and sound cooperative relations.As the most concentrated continent of developing countries,Africa's economic performance has received attention,and how to promote the continuous transformation and upgrading of economic structures is a major issue facing African countries.The translated text selected Chapters 1 and 9 of Industries Without Smokestacks:Industrialization in Africa Reconsidered(Excerpt)as the case analysis object of this translation practice.The first chapter is an overview of industries without smokestacks and the adjustment of the African industrial structure.The ninth chapter takes the smokeless economy of Ethiopia as a case to analyze the future economic development opportunities in Africa.The translation practice is guided by Halliday and Hasan's discourse cohesion theory,and analyzes cases from two aspects: lexical cohesion and grammatical cohesion.Economic and trade texts mainly describe objective facts,convey specific information and use precise words.The primary consideration of the author in the translation is the use of cohesive devices in the text.The author classifies the cohesive devices in the original English text,and finds that the lexical cohesion in this economic report mainly consists of the repetition of original words,the repetition of synonyms/near-synonyms,general words and antisense cohesion and combination.and grammatical cohesion are mainly referred to personal reference,indicative reference,substitution and omission,and the relationship between addition and transition.In terms of lexical cohesion,English is a hypotaxis language,and the cohesion between words is mostly dominant.Through the use of lexical repetition,synonym or near-synonym,the logical relationship between sentences is shown.Through the analysis of the article,it is found that the commonly used translation strategies are direct repetition source grammar,amplification and ellipsis.On the problems of reference selection,substitution/ellipsis indefiniteness,and connectionlogic indefiniteness in grammatical cohesion,the semantic coherence effect of discourse can be achieved by three translation strategies: retention of cohesive devices,ellipsis of cohesive devices,and conversion of cohesive devices.The author hopes to understand the real economic situation of African countries through the translation of African industries without smokestacks economic text.It will provide China investors and African economic researchers with the latest theoretical and data information to better understand the economic situation of Africa,so as to participate the globalization more extensively and deeply.Finally,this translation report explores the solutions to various convergence problems in the texts of economic reports through specific case studies,hoping to provide some reference for the translation of similar texts in the future.
