A Practice Report On Chinese-English Whispered Interpreting At The 2018 Brand Agriculture Development International Symposium

This report is based on the author's experience in Chinese-English whispered interpreting practice at the 2018 Brand Agriculture Development International Symposium under the theoretical framework of interpreters' subjectivity.The symposium has a series of topics to address,which are characterized by internationalization,economization and agriculturalization.The author's main task is to interpret for Adam Martin,the president of New Zealand Trade Center,by whispering at the opening ceremony and parallel forum.The involved speeches have some distinct characteristics: frequent citation of verses and idioms,continual use of numerical expressions,and frequent use of improvisation.During the whispered interpreting process,the interpreter employs her subjectivity and uses interpreting tactics: generalization of long and complex sentences,omission of repetitive and redundant information,fuzzification of frequently-occurring large figures,explanation of idioms,paraphrasing of verses,and reformulation of colloquialisms,to fulfill the interpreting task.As whispered interpreting has the feature of flexibility,instantaneity,and pertinence,the interpreter has to offer an effective and qualified interpretation according to the client's requirement within a limited time,which attaches great importance to the employment of interpreters' subjectivity.On the basis of the speech features of the symposium and the requirement of the client,this report introduces the application of interpreters' subjectivity in this interpreting task from the linguistic perspective and the cultural perspective.In the end,it reaches to the conclusions that: interpreters' subjectivity could promote the efficiency of this whispered interpreting;interpreting practice should better be combined with theoretical knowledge if an interpreter wants to make improvements in interpreting;an interpreter should always bear the client's requirement in mind during the interpreting process if he or she wants to better finish the interpreting task.It is hoped that this report can provide some useful and practical suggestions on future whispered interpreting tasks.
