The government work report is a kind of typical political document.Different from the translation of other cross-cultural communication materials,the translation of government work report is relatively distinctive in lexical and syntactical level,as well as in textual level,such as the differences between Chinese and foreign culture,the local characteristics of grass-root cities,and the unique features of political documents.All the distinctiveness makes the translation of government work report a challenging field,which demands translators' particular attention throughout the entire translating process.This report is selected from the GWR of Beilun District,year 2016.Its main content consists of three parts: the first part summarizes the main work in 2015 and review of the Twelfth Five-Year Plan.The second part is the overall deployment of work in 2016 and sets the overall goal of government work in 2016.The last part is to specifically describe the major work arrangements for 2016.Limited to the length of the source text,the GWR of Beilun District,year 2016(11400 words)is chosen as the translation practice and has been translated from Chinese to English.Besides articulation of the language features of the source text,the report presents as well the translation difficulties and its corresponding solutions.The report comprises five parts.The first part is introduction,which mainly presents the background information,significance of the report,and the structure of the report.The second part is progress description,which contains the pre-preparation,translation process and proofreading and revision.The third part gives a brief introduction to the features of the source text and Functional Equivalence Theory proposed by Nida and how the theory guides the translation.The fourth part is case study.The author analyzes how the Functional Equivalence Theory is applied in the translation at the lexical level,syntactical level and textual level by employing some corresponding translation methods such as literal translation,literal translation with explanation and translation skills like conversion and division.The last part is conclusion,which relates the translation experience that the author summarizes from her translation task,together with some limitations.Through the translation practice,the writer is aware that the translation of political text is not an easy task and the writer hopes to provide reference for future studies.
