This practice report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the fifth to the seventh chapters of International Water Scarcity and Variability which belongs to popular science text. This report is mainly about translation of the passive sentences in the source text and solutions to the problems encountered in this translation process from the perspective of functional equivalence theory. The source text mainly introduces how basin riparian countries cope with water scarcity and variability as well as some institutions and incentives relating to the international water management. The translation skills are analyzed in the report from word level and sentence level under the guidance of functional equivalence theory. In word level,it discusses the translation of the specialized words and the conversion of word class which makes the translation in line with the conventional expressions of the target readers and improves the readability. In sentence level, passive sentence serves as the most striking linguistic feature of popular science text, and it has a high frequency in the source text.Besides, the translation of this kind of sentence is one of the major difficulties encountered in translation process. Therefore, passive sentences are chosen as the focus of my report in sentence level.Considering the different usages of passive sentences between English and Chinese, some translation methods are summarized. The passive sentences in the original text can be transformed into three types of Chinese sentences that are non-subject sentences and active sentences as well as passive sentences with or without the Chinese word “被”.Through my translation practices,a large amount of translation experience has been accumulated and my competence in translation has been improved a lot.
