Translation Strategies For Complicated Long Sentences In Meteorological Popular Text From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

The translation material for this translation report is excerpted from the second volume of A Student Guide to Climate and Weather,in which different climates and their impacts are introduced with specific cases.The popular science knowledge in this book is exhaustive,which provides teenager students with the enlightenment of meteorological knowledge.The book is a meteorological science textbook and has functions of both the informative and scientific text,which is featured with lots of long sentences,such as simple long sentences,compound sentences,complex sentences and compound-complex sentences.Due to the fact of being multiplied by other grammatical components,these long sentences form the complicated sentences,and therefore become the key part of the translation practice.Under the guidance of Nida's Functional Equivalence Theory and with a focus on the informative function of the meteorological science text,the translator applies a variety of translation methods,such as recasting,embedding,amplification,omission,cutting,reversing,conversion and synchronizing to deal with the long and complicated sentences of the source text,in order to better explore the translation strategies of meteorological popular science texts from a comprehensive perspective.This report is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is the description of the source text,the significance of the translation practice and the translation process.Chapter Two is about the theoretical basis of the translation practice.Chapter Three describes the categories of long sentences and identifies the complicated long sentences in the source text with a review of its previous studies.Chapter Four is the focus of this report.Typical examples of complicated long sentences in source text are illustrated and presented for analysis and discussion.The last chapter is a summary of the translator's experience and shortcomings in translation practice.
