| The source text of this translation report is excerpted from the social science book Gender and Education in England since 1770: A Social and Cultural History,published in2022.From a social and cultural history perspective,this book tells a long and intricate story of how ideas of gender,culture and power were woven into the fabric of English education since 1770,and how different genders and social classes were treated unequally in education.Through numerous documentary sources,including oral testimonies,autobiographies,and sociological ethnographies,the book charted that history,bringing the past into a critical dialogue with the present.This book demonstrates a deep concern for issues related to gender and education and provides references for scholars studying gender and education at home and abroad,making it important to study in translation.There are 11 chapters in this book.And Chapter Two and Three are selected as the source material for translation.There are many passive sentences in the source text,which makes it difficult to understand the contents for readers.From the perspective of functional equivalence theory,the translation process should not only accurately convey the text information,but also convey the spirit and thoughts of the source text,so that the readers of the target text and the source text can have the same reading effect.Therefore,in order to ensure the accuracy of information transmission as well as the feelings of readers,this translation report explores the translation strategies of passive sentences in social science texts under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory.Through the analysis of example sentences,the translation strategies of passive sentences are divided into three categories,that is,translating passive sentences into active sentences,passive sentences and subjectless sentences,and the specific translation methods of each category are also summarized.When translating passive sentences into active sentences,the methods can be used by keeping the subject unchanged,changing the original subject into object and adding subject;when translating passive sentences into passive structures,the methods can be adopted by translating into explicit passive sentences or semi-implicit passive sentences;when translating passive sentences into subjectless sentences,the methods can be used by translating into directive subjectless Chineses sentences and non-directive subjectless Chinese sentences.This translation report consists of five chapters.The first chapter introduces the source text of the translation practice and its research significance.The second chapter discusses the three processes of translation,that is,pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.The third chapter provides the theoretical framework of functional equivalence theory and passive sentence,and summarizes the guiding significance of functional equivalence theory for passive sentence translation in social science texts.The fourth chapter analyzes the translation cases under the guidance of functional equivalence theory,which proposes three translation strategies for passive sentences,namely,translating passive sentences into active sentences,passive sentences and subjectless sentences.The last chapter summarizes the findings and limitations of this translation practice. |
