A Practice Report On Syntactic Structure Adaptation In Chinese Translation Of A Guide In Support Of National Human Rights Institutions

This translation practice chooses an electronic version of research report published in March,2019 by UNFPA——A Guide in Support of National Human Rights Institutions——Country Assessments and National Inquiries on Human Rights in the Context of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Well-being,as the target of translation,and discusses the application of syntactic adaptation technique in English-Chinese translation.The vocabulary of this investigation report is formal,with numerous and various proper nouns and terminology;The syntactic structure of this report is complicated,and its word sequence is cumbersome,which is distinct from Chinese one when compared with Chinese syntactic structure.The diction and language style of this report is rigorous,objective,accurate and detailed,and the scope of knowledge this report covers is comprehensive,with interdisciplinary characteristics.In allusion to translation issues discovered in the review of the original translation,the author applies corresponding translation strategies,as solutions,for the adaptation the original translation.Because most of the translation issues are consequences of differences between syntactic structures in Chinese and English languages,the author generalizes the translation issues as the following: The alteration and adaptation of sentence structures in translation from English to Chinese,complicated word sequence and its solutions in translation between English and Chinese,transformation of language logic in translation and transformation of voice in translation,and applies embedding,inversion,the adaption of static and dynamic as solutions of the alteration and adaptation of sentence structures in translation from English to Chinese,recasting and cutting as solutions of complicated word sequence and its solutions in translation between English and Chinese,logical manifestationand logical merging as solutions of transformation of language logic in translation,and converting passive-voice into active-voice,keeping passive-voice,and translating passive-voice in Chinese into subjectless sentences in English as solutions of transformation of voice in translation.Case analysis and the summary of this translation practice make it clear that: the syntactic adaptation techniques applied have good pertinence and effectiveness to the solution of corresponding translation issues,and the quality of the adaptation of translation has been remarkably improved.
