Mobile phone addiction has an adverse impact on college students' mental health and academic achievement.Negative emotions are important predictors of mobile phone addiction. And the different antecedents between general negative emotions and negative academic emotions lead to some domain-specific consequences. To put forward more accurate preventive measures for mobile phone addiction among college students, the present research accessed the impact of negative academic emotions on mobile phone addiction and the underlying mechanisms.Among negative academic emotions, academic anxiety and academic boredom are the two types of negative emotions that students experience most, and their effects are somewhat the same and somewhat opposite. Therefore, this research examined how academic anxiety and academic boredom respectively affected mobile phone addiction through coping style;and then integrated academic anxiety and academic boredom together into the mediation model to explore whether the overlap and offset effects existed on the pathway where two academic emotions influence mobile phone addiction through coping style. To sum up,the current research examined how academic anxiety and academic boredom directly influenced mobile phone addiction and the mediating role of coping styles.A total of 366 effective questionnaires were collected online. The current research adopted descriptive statistics analysis, correlation analysis, independent sample t-test,ANOVA in SPSS,and multiple regression analysis in PROCESS,and structure equation model(SEM)in AMOS to examine the influence of demographic variables on academic anxiety and boredom, coping styles and mobile phone addiction, and the mediating effect. The results showed that: 1)academic anxiety, academic boredom, and negative coping style were positively related to mobile phone addiction.2)The SEM analysis showed that positive and negative coping style mediated the effect of academic boredom on mobile phone addiction, and positive coping style mediated the effect of academic anxiety on mobile phone addiction.3)The regression analysis showed that before academic anxiety and academic boredom were jointly included in the model, negative coping partly mediated the association between academic anxiety and mobile phone addiction;there was no mediation effect of positive coping between academic anxiety and mobile phone addiction. In contrast, after academic anxiety and academic boredom were included in the model, negative coping stopped mediating the association between academic anxiety and mobile phone addiction;the positive coping partly mediated the association between academic anxiety and mobile phone addiction.4)the freshman's level of academic boredom was significantly lower than that of the sophomores and juniors.5)College students from urban areas had a lower level of mobile phone addiction than those from rural areas. The current study implied that 1)academic anxiety and academic boredom influenced mobile phone addiction through coping styles.2)Academic emotions might cause different outcomes from general emotions with respect to coping style.Although general anxiety might reduce the positive coping style, academic anxiety increased the positive coping style.3)The high correlation between academic anxiety and negative coping style can be a spurious association, which is caused by the fact that academic boredom was correlated to both academic anxiety and negative coping style;and the positive correlation between academic anxiety and positive coping style were partly offset by the negative correlation between academic boredom and coping style.4)Future researches could pay more attention to academic boredom to raise effective preventive measures against mobile phone addiction.
