This translation report is based on the translation of A Matter of Will(excerpts),with a total of more than 14000 words. The book is a legal thriller. The protagonist,Will, who is on the brink of unemployment, encounters a mysterious “rich” man Sam and his lover Eve.With the "help" of the two,he hits big in his career and the romantic relationship.Suddenly,a series of murdering cases happen, the truth gradually comes to light.Whether he will choose to play with the devil or confess to the angel,it depends entirely on his will and choice. The report is divided into five parts. The first part is about the task description, which mainly introduces the source text, the author, and the stylistic features of the book,so that the reader can have a basic understanding of this book. The second part is the designing and planning of the translation. The third part is the introduction of translation strategies, which mainly discusses Peter Newmark's text type theory and his translation theory.By comparing communicative translation with semantic translation, the translator explores their similarities and differences, and comes to the conclusion that they should both be employed in the novel translation. The fourth part includes the case analysis. Finally, the translator summarizes the report, and also details on the feelings after finishing this translation task, hoping to improve translation skills through this practice.Throughout the translation, the translator encountered a host of language difficulties.Under the guidance of Peter Newmark's communicative and semantic translation, she analyzed the problems at the lexical and syntactic levels and proposed a few practical methods, such as amplification, omission, division and so on,in hope of aiding future student translators.
