The growing environment-friendly consciousness, the increasing cost of fossil fuels and concerns about their future supply drive people to explore clean energy.Nuclear power, the use of nuclear reactions to produce electricity,is one of the clean and sustainable energy sources as it reduces greenhouse gas emissions and air pollutants generation. This report is based on translation practice of “Nuclear and Hydropower”,Chapter 8 of the book Energy Economics: Markets,History and Policy. The source text mainly presents current status of nuclear energy utilization around the world. It introduces the pros and cons of nuclear power, promise of nuclear power as well as some key reactors and their principle of operation. The translation material,as a textbook,is easy-to-understand for Chinese readers so as to spread information about nuclear power.According to adaptation theory, language use is a continuous making of choice consciously or unconsciously, for language-internal or external reasons(Verschueren.1999).The translation process is a process where the translator makes adaptation and choice in accordance to language, context and culture, which complies with adaptation theory. The translation process was finished under the guidance of adaptation theory.Based on the analysis of the features of English for Science and Technology(EST),this report analyzes the translating process from the perspective of linguistic context adaptation and linguistic structure adaptation. This translation report consists of four parts. The first chapter is a task description, including analysis of the source text, aim and significance of the translation. The second chapter describes translation process and the translation theory applied in the t ranslation process. The third chapter is the case analysis, which illustrates the translation methods in the translation process based on linguistic adaptation and context adaptation. The last part is a reflection on the translation practice.
