Realization Of Fluency In English-Chinese Simultaneous Interpretation

This practice report is based on the simulated simultaneous interpretation of the debate at Oxford Union in 2018,whose motion was “ Whether the Manipulation of Human DNA Is an Ethical Necessity”.All the advocates,both affirmative and negative,were professional in the fields of “DNA” and related areas,and they support or oppose to the motion in a objective and calm manner,taking full advantage of their own knowledge,perspectives and experiences.In this practice report,the writer mainly analyzes and summarizes the objective factors that affect the realization of fluency in English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation and the ways of solving the obstacles caused by these factors.With the guidance of Gile's Effort Model,the interpreter could use the techniques including omission and generalization to solve the obstacles caused by content factors including the expressions with high information density and expressions with English characteristics.The interpreter uses addition to address the problems caused by linguistic factors such as complex syntax and ambiguous expressions.The interpreter adopts the combination of strategies of literal and free translation to find the functional equivalents of context factors including humorous language and speaker's pause so as to realize the fluency of target language.This practice report summarizes the experiences of achieving target language's fluency in English-Chinese simultaneous interpretation,and hopes to provide some references for subsequent related studies.
