A Practice Report On Escort Interpreting In Jiayuguan Pass

To promote the practice of the Belt and Road Initiative and the advocate of “telling China's stories and conveying China's voice”,the Silk Road(Dunhuang)International Cultural Expo and the Dunhuang Tour-Silk Road International Tourism Festival(hereinafter referred to as the “Expo & Festival”)were held jointly for the first time from July 30 to September 5,2019.Publicity was placed in a prominent position and numerous domestic and foreign mainstream media outlets were invited for publicity to enhance the influence of the Expo & Festival.This report provides an in-depth description and analysis of an interpreting service for an Estonian Media Group in Jiayuguan Pass,which was one part of its seven-day visit to the Expo & Festival.The task was entrusted by the Foreign Affairs Office of the People's Government of Gansu Province.The background,entrusting party and clients of the interpreting task are first introduced in the report.Next,task description,characteristics of the escort interpreting,and requirements of the entrusting party are detailed.Interpreting process consists of pre-interpreting,mid-interpreting and post-interpreting.The pre-interpreting part includes preparation for background information,interpreting tools and resources,an overview of Adaptation Theory and interpreting techniques,interpreting plan,list of terms and emergency plan.The mid-interpreting contains quality control and process description.The post-interpreting introduces self-evaluation and feedback from both the entrusting party and the clients.The case is analyzed according to the Adaptation Theory.A summary,reflections and implications for the future work are given in the concluding part.According to Adaptation Theory,language use is a process of choice-making.As a communicative activity,interpreting itself is a dynamic process,in which the making of linguistic choices should be based on highly flexible principles and strategies.Under the guidance of the Adaptation Theory,interpreting techniques of borrowing,explication,splitting,combination,literal interpreting,paraphrase,and adaptation,are used in the process of choosing language at different levels of words,sentences and texts.
