In consecutive interpretation, interpreters should use fluent and concise target language, but the real-world scenario is often not as satisfactory,as redundancy is usually unavoidable due to various factors. The types of target language redundancy are diversified, including repetition, excessive use of filler words, heavy expression, etc.Excessive redundancy is a flaw for interpretation in the way that it wastes time and can sometimes be misleading for the audience.Taking Ian Newton's speech themed on refugee in the context of COVID-19 on a simulation conference as an example, this paper divides the most frequently occurring redundancy in the case into fillers, repetition, improper self-correction and unnecessary explanation. This paper discusses the reasons for the above redundancy in three aspects including language ability, expression habits and notes based on the review of translation texts in interpretation and the reference of previous literature, and puts forward corresponding solutions.By discussing causes of redundancy and corresponding solutions, the author hopes to provide some guidance for the author herself and other interpretation learners in future interpretation practice,so that they can reflect on the situation and avoid redundancy as much as possible,so as to interpret with more concise and clearer target language and improve the quality of interpretation.
