In consecutive interpreting, the interpreter interprets after the speaker finishes several sentences or a part of the speech. Therefore,a conference with consecutive interpreting service usually lasts longer than one without such service. In this case, consecutive interpreters are required to deliver interpretation in a short and concise way and in many cases, interpreters are expected to occupy shorter time than the speaker does.In order to meet this expectation, consecutive interpreters should make sure that his or her interpreting is of high-quality,concise and to the point.Avoiding redundancy is a must since too much redundancy may make the conference unnecessarily long and cause unsatisfaction among the audience. This thesis is a case study based on one mock conference where Ian Newton made a speech about refugees around the world during the Covid-19 pandemic and the education situation of refugee children in general. At this conference, the author served as the interpreter for the last five parts lasting about 34 minutes. The original speech and the author's interpretation are analyzed and the repeating redundancies are specifically discussed.Based on the theories and case studies of other scholars and professional interpreters, the author explores the concept of redundancy and the classification of it in translation and interpretation field. Then the author categorizes five different types of redundancy appearing in this interpreting. After that, the author points out the four main causes behind them and finally, the author puts forward four corresponding strategies, which may help student interpreters to overcome excessive redundancy in their interpretation.
