Redundancy is an integral part of language.Moderate redundancy can help control information density and make the listener understand the information better, while excessive redundancy can greatly reduce the efficiency of information transmission. In the interlingual communication activity of consecutive interpretation, excessive redundancy of the translated language comes in the form of fuzzy and superfluous information and hence imposes an unnecessary burden on the listener. The degree of redundancy may be influenced by various factors, such as the redundancy of the source language and the capabilities of the interpreter. The thesis takes the mock conference of “The Promotion Event of the Book Affordable Excellence”as an example, analyzes the causes of redundancy in English-Chinese interpretation and proposes targeted coping strategies. In this thesis, redundancy is categorized into meaningless fillers, tautological repetition, syntactic redundancy and excessive supplementation, based on analyses of the transcripts of the source language and the translated language, the concept of redundancy in information theory and relevant studies in the field of translation. After having reviewed the interpretation notes and logical thinking during the interpretation process, the author summarizes the causes of redundancy as follows: insufficient analysis of the source language, inefficient automation during the output process, and unrefined Chinese. To solve these problems, the author proposes the following improvement strategies: strengthening listening of the source language, enhancing the awareness of integrating source language, pursuing faster interpretation automation, and improving language habits. |
