Causes Of And Solutions To Redundancy In English-Chinese Consecutive Interpreting

When it comes to consecutive interpreting,interpreters should deliver what speakers just said in an accurate and fluent way.At an official conference,both organizers and the audience expect interpretation to be accurate,efficient and short.To this end,interpreters must be concise and try to avoid redundancy.But this is a challenge for most fresh interpreters and interpreting students.Too much redundancy often prolongs delivery,and makes the audience less satisfied with interpreters or even question their professionalism.This thesis is based on the interpretation done by the author during the mock conference “the refugees during the coronavirus pandemic” by professor Ian Newton,during which the author's redundancy was the biggest issue.This thesis focuses on causes of redundancy and strategies to deal with it in interpretation.It describes what redundancy is and its types at the very beginning,gives an introduction of the case study and redundancy in the author's interpretation,and then analyzes causes of redundancy and strategies to deal with it in interpretation.The author,by analyzing redundancy in her own interpretation,hopes to raise awareness of this problem and provide possible solutions for other interpreters.
