As a figure of speech, metaphor is widely found in everyday life language and academic writing.Metaphorical expressions include words or phrases that make hidden comparisons between two different objects or actions without any explicit comparing words. In academic writing, metaphorical terms are sometimes used as an ad hoc technical expression to serve a particular context. However, few studies have been devoted to the translation of metaphorical terms,or more specifically, the Chinese-English translation of such terms,as is the case discussed in this thesis.Based on a case study of the Chinese-English translation of Global Cities, this thesis defines the meaning of metaphorical terms, discusses typical challenges encountered in rendering Chinese metaphorical terms used in Global Cities, and proposes five tentative strategies for making such renderings more appropriate and systematic. The author hopes that this thesis will provide future translators of metaphorical terms with some applicable solutions to similar translation challenges and insights into the research of metaphorical terms in translation.
