Challenges And Strategies For The Translation Of Long Sentences In Un Documents

UN documents feature rigorousness,formality,information sensitivity and a wide variety of topics.Long sentences are one of the major characteristics in UN documents.The sentences are long and complex as a result of the implicit logic within a sentence,as well as frequent use of parallel and noun structures with a number of restrictive components.As a case study of the translation program from the Chinese Translation Service in the UN Headquarters,this thesis primarily deals with challenges concerning accuracy and readability in the translation of long sentences in UN documents.The thesis gives specific strategies in terms of the translation challenges of long sentences in UN documents,including information accuracy through analysis of main sentence structure and reference to the relevant documents in texts,rearrangement of sentences based on the logic within.In terms of readability,the translators should use proper and concise expressions to make sentences accurate and readable.It is hoped that this thesis will provide translators with some useful ideas on the translation of UN documents.
