The 97th session of Maritime Safety Committee has received a large number of documents submitted by Member States.Translating this kind of documents correctly is significant to the development of China's shipping industry,for which part of this documents was selected.This report studies and concludes the translation techniques of long sentence in these documents by the method of case analysis.And as one kind of maritime legal documents,the conference paper wrote in a formal style which includes amendments,proposals,draft resolution,draft recommendations,draft circular and so on.Conference papers are very informative and specialized,which covers a wide range of subjects including shipbuilding,shipping safety,maritime convention,etc.,often characterized by numerous long sentences as well as lots of maritime,legal and technical terminologies even the abbreviations which result in a tough challenge for translators.This report focuses on long sentences in these texts.Here,the author selects a sentence with 30 or more words and defines it as a long sentence.This report analyzes the structure of long sentences in this material and then carries out a further study on the problems arising from this translation practice,which can be addressed by six techniques,namely,Synchronizing.Reversing,Embedding,Dividing,Inserting and Recasting;and guided by the translation theory of Peter Newmark:the communicative translation.The report analyzes the long complex sentences in these documents with the expectation to provide references for Chinese maritime surveyors in the process of composing a draft maritime conference documents in English and translating original international maritime papers into Chinese.
