This report covers the first two chapters of “The State of the World’s Children2009”, issued by United Nations Children’s Fund, which affirms the joint efforts thewhole world has made to improve the rate of child survival. It points out the hugedifferences in maternal and neonatal health risks in different countries, and at the sametime, it puts forward some suggestions to promote progress on maternal and newbornhealth. By translating this report, the writer has found that there are a lot of longsentences in the text. So, clarifying the relationship of component and reproducing thefluency of the original text may be the most difficult part in this practice. The principlesof “Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Closeness” proposed by Mr. Liu Zhongde areexemplified with analysis of some examples selected from the actual translation of theselected materials. The author tries to make translation be faithful to the content, beclear to the reader and be close to the style with the help of some proper translationskills.This thesis consists of five parts. The first part is introduction, introducing theresearch background, purpose and significance of this thesis; Part2presents thetranslation process, including task preparation, the process of translation and issues aftertranslation; Part3analyzes the characteristics of the UN organization documenttranslation, makes a brief description of pragmatic translation and the three principlesof “faithfulness, expressiveness and closeness.” The core of this thesis lies in Part4,which discusses different translation methods used in long English sentences in UNdocuments under the guidance of the three principles, taking the long sentences asexamples from the State of the World’s Children2009. Part5summarizes somethoughts about this translation practice.
