Marx and Engels created historical materialism in the mid-nineteenth century, and they realized a great change in the concept of history. But at the end of the 19 th century after the death of Marx, historical materialism suffered from challenges and distortions from all sides. In order to maintain the rationality of historical materialism and meet the needs of the in-depth development of the workers' movement in the late 19 th century,Engels reinterpreted and perfected historical materialism by combining with new practices. The thought of historical synergy is the new exploration of Engels' s historical materialism and the improvement and development of historical materialism.Today,we have an in-depth study of the Engels' s historical synergy theory helps us to further explore the deep meaning of historical materialism, has very important theoretical significance and has very important guiding significance for the practice of contemporary social development by its theory of concordance coincides with the comprehensive development that our contemporary society pursues.Based on the above considerations, this paper attempts to explain Engels' historical synergy theory from three parts:The first part examines the background and theoretical origins of historical synergy theory. The historical materialism is facing some new challenges, which makes Engels gradually realize that there are some negligence and omissions in the historical materialism,so it is necessary to re-interpret and improve it.We can summarizes the realistic background of Engels' s theory of historical synergy by analyzing a series of new situations and new challenges in the capitalist society at the end of the 19 th century. Before the formation of historical materialism, various schools of thought in the West had made many discussions on the factors that promoted the development of social history.Through the analysis of these schools of thought which had a profound impact on Marx and Engels' thoughts, the theoretical origin of the formation of the theory of historical synergy was traced back. The second part discusses the generation context and theoretical structure of historical synergy theory. The formation of the theory of historical synergy is not accomplished overnight,It has undergone a process of ideological evolution: The Progress of Social Reform Movement on the Continent and other documents have explored the motive force of historical development.,it really sprouted in Ludwig Feuerbach and the End of German Classical Philosophy, formed in Jean Bloch and perfected in Jean Bolgius.Through exploring it in stages,we find the theoretical formation process of the theory of historical synergy theory. The content of historical synergy theory is analyzed from the three dimensions of subjective force, object synergy and the combination of subject and object. Therefore,we concluded that historical synergy theory has such basic characteristics: the inevitability and the contingency are unified;the objectivity and the subjectivity are unified;the forwardness and the tortuosity are unified;the unity and the diversity are unified. The third part focuse on the enlightenment significance of historical synergy theory to the development of contemporary society. The creation of historical materialism by Marx and Engels serves as a service in essence, and the historical synergy theory is no exception as a part of this theory. This part mainly explores the conformity between the theory of historical resultant force and the comprehensive development pursued by our society, and enlightens us to proceed from reality when carrying out socialist practice. And in practice,we should take the people as the center and give full play to the role of human beings. We should focus on economic construction while not neglecting the reaction of the superstructure in order to promote the comprehensive development of our society.
