Due to the different cultural contexts, the titles between “disabled people” and “people with disability” challenged the researcher and provoked alternative thoughts. What is the difference between these titles? Are there some deeper cultural ideologies or social distance behind these titles? And how to apply them in current social work in China? At first, the sense was that these people were far from us.Then, when cautiously approach them,we realize that this people group was actually close to us,but with dehumanization neglected by our weak social consciousness, not only by “me”(the researcher)but also by “us”.The study is based on the experience of the researcher herself with the method of self-ethnography.And the main goal of the study is that the public should be more concerned with the vulnerable group, and the professionals should also have a more humble attitude toward the group, listening carefully to them and walking alongside them. The study contains six parts: Part One gives a general orientation.Part Two describes what is the meaning of “People with disability”,and distinguishes it with the concept of “disabled people”.Part Three focuses on the relationship between “Me”(researcher)and the “people with disability”,from firstly ignoring them, then to paying attention to them and approaching them.Part Four brings the topic to a social level, the gaps between groups cause the people with disability many obstacles, both in the outside environment and the inside mentality of ordinary people.Part Five returns to the professional issue: how should we,as social workers, adjust the viewpoints toward ourselves, and toward the people with disability and their situation.Lastly,Part Six concludes the report.
