As the gatekeepers of graduate education,graduate admission is of great significance to the quality of graduate education.To do a good job of graduate admission and select the students with potential,the effect in graduate education will be twice the result twice the result.The United States is not only a power country in graduate education,but also a powerful country in graduate education.The quality of graduate students in the United States has been recognized by all the countries in the world,which has a great relationship with a complete set of graduate admission system in the United States.This article mainly includes six parts.The part of 1-5 that exploring the history of the development of the American Master's Graduate Admissions System,they were: the budding period(17th century-1880s),establishment period(1890s-1930s),normative period(1940s – mid 1960s),adjustment period(late 1960s-early 1990s)and consolidation period(Mid 1990s-).Each part is based on an in-depth understanding of the background of graduate education,analyzing historical periods,summarizing the changes in the admission system for graduate students in the United States,and using individual case studies to highlight the changing characteristics of each historical stage.In the first part,based on the exploration of graduate education in the United States,an honorary master's degree-to explore the formal postgraduate education-the establishment of Johns Hopkins University,emerged as the true seed of graduate education.At this stage,with the change of graduate education,the admission standards of graduate have also changed accordingly,so that the admission system of graduates will germinate.The second part,in the process of standardization of graduate education in the United States,continues to strengthen graduate education related work as the research background.In this process,when American graduate schools selected master graduate students,certain standards have emerged,and four institutions of Harvard,Yale,Columbia,and Princeton have started their entrance exams for graduate admissions,which is the predecessor of the American Graduate Entrance Examination(GRE).The third part explores that the graduate education in the United States has entered the “golden age”,and the development of graduate education puts forward higher standards for selecting talents for graduate schools.As a result,the enrollment of graduate school in the United States began to standardize during this period.The examination is undertaken by the specialized folk institutions,and the admission work was separated from the examination work.At this time,the graduate admission in the United States has formed a system and will be perfected since then.The fourth part explores the new admission criteria for the admission of graduate students in the United States.During this period,the development of graduate education in the United States,the awareness of ethnic minorities for equality in education,and the increase in the number of foreign students.In this context,the traditional admission standards have not met the needs of postgraduate admission.During this period,the applicant's non-cognitive ability received attention in graduate admisison.The fifth part,on the basis of exploring the diversity of graduate education in the United States,analyzes the graduate admission system.During this period,the graduate school admission in the United States continued to reform itself in order to meet the needs of graduate education development.Through graduate student entrance exams,expert recommendation letters,and the development of new admission methods,etc.,reforms are made so that applicants who meet the needs of graduate education can be selected.In the sixth part,based on the development of the history of graduate student enrollment system in the United States,the characteristics of the historical development of the graduate enrollment system in the United States are summarized.And according to the deficiencies of our graduate admission,referring to the American historical development experience,put forward constructive suggestions,in order to make our graduate admission can be more perfect,more scientific selection of talent.
