International Chinese textbooks are important guides to teaching Chinese as a foreign or second language.They are also reflections on the teaching outcomes.In the past few years,the demand of high quality international Chinese textbooks,especially for Children,has increased rapidly.In the research on the Chinese teaching in BC Chinese language assistant program,two big challenges in Chinese teaching in UK primary schools were shown.The first one is the lack of textbooks.Most children textbooks available now are designed for oversea students who are learning Chinese in China or the Chinese children who are oversea.The number of the textbooks design for UK primary schools and UK primary school students is very small.The second one is the lack of coherence on teaching contains between primary and secondary schools.This thesis is aimed to design a series of picture textbooks for the Chinese beginners in UK primary schools.Six chapters are included.In the first chapter,a picture of the characteristics and principles of the International Chinese textbooks is shown,especially of the children textbooks.In the second chapter,the author analyzed the survey on Chinese teaching hours and school year calendars in UK primary schools and then suggests that a practical and suitable way to organizing Chinese teaching should be topics.In the third chapter,the author compared and contrasted the teaching topics in several Chinese textbooks published by China and UK.The author also compared and contrasted the teaching topics in GCSE Chinese syllabus and YCT 1 & 2 syllabus.Then an outline of the teaching topics and the teaching order for this series of textbooks is shown.In the fourth chapter,the author calculated the teaching contains in widely used Chinese and English textbooks and then chose vocabulary,grammar points,Chinese characters and culture knowledge for each topic.At the same time,the principles for pictures are demonstrated,too.In chapter five,some advises on teaching on how to teach pronunciation,vocabulary,Chinese characters,grammar and culture are given.Suggestion how teachers should make fully use of the teaching materials going with picture books is shown.Teaching Chinese in UK is different from teaching Chinese in China.Advises on having the local resource included are also given.In the end,suggestion on the further discussion and study is given,too.
