The reports of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China pointed out that the social ism with Chinese characterist ics marched into the new era and made a new and important conclusion on the main contradictions of our society.Socialist education with Chinese characteristics,as an important part of it,has also ushered in a new era.The main contradictions in the education field have also undergone profound changes,from "learning" to "learning well",from one-sided emphasis on mastering subject knowledge to the training goal of building up morality and cultivating people",which have pointed out the directions for the education reform.At the same time,with increasing attention of the whole society to education and the growing sense of democracy,the participation in educational activities is getting higher and higher.Globalization and the development of self-Media made a huge amount of information impacting on every educator and educatee's ideas and attitudes every day.As a school with good basic resources and social reputation,urban high-qua]ity middle schools bear high social expectations and are models for ordinary schools to learn.As principals of them,in the new historical stage,whether they can adapt to the requirements of the times,adjust their working ideas and methods,and meet the challenges from all sides,requires strong theoretica]knowledge and practical experience as backing,and the whole abilities of a principal refer to the principal's leadership.This paper is to study the leadership of principals of high-quality urban middle schools in the context of the new era.Firstly,through analyzing the literature,it defined the concept and dimensions of principals' leadership in urban high-quality middle schools.It holds that a principal' leadership is a comprehensive ability,which plays an important role in guiding school development,promoting teachers and students' growth,creating a good culture,encouraging practical innovation,and strengthening internal and external communication,thus promoting the overall development of schools and students'personal growth.In the new era,the leadership of principals in hi gh-quality urban middle schools should include five aspects,namely,school development leadership,cultural and educating lcadership,teachers and teaching leadership,practical and innovative leadership and internal and external communication leadership.Then,using the mixed research method,with quantitative research as the main and qualitative research as the supplement,it investigated the current situations of principals' leadership in urban high-quality middle schools.A random survey of 32 school leaders and 158 ordinary teachers were conducted in three high-quality middle schools in T city.The results showed that both school leaders and teachers have higher perceptions of the overall level of principals leadership,but their perceptions of principals' performance in various dimensions are different.The principle s gender and the school size will significantly influence school leaders perception of principles leadership,the teacher s age,teaching age,teaching subject,principle s age and the school history have significant influence on their perceptions of principles leadership.In view of the problems reflected in the questionnaire data,the interview outlines for school leaders and ordinary teachers which include 8 and 7 questions respectively are drawn up to further explore the current situations of the leadership of high-quality urban middle school principals in the new era.By interviewing with two principals,two grade directors and three ordinary teachers,it found that the main problems of principals' leadership in urban high-quality middle schools can be divided into external and internal reasons:the external reasons mainly lie in the imperfect management system of principals;the internal reasons mainly lie in the principals' personal qualities to be improved.In view of these problems,this paper argues that we should also start from two main directions to improve the principals' leadership.On one hand,we should improve the management system of principals and attach importance to the cultivation of principals;on the other hand,principals should establish and renew the concepts of leadership,through comprehensive and long-term learning and practice,and improve the overall leadership of principals,so that they can bravely meet the challenges and opportunities of the new era and make constant progress.
