The 21 st century is an era of rapid economic development.Advanced science and technology have provided us with convenient means for exploring and utilizing nature. However, human's excessive use of natural resources has also caused ecological damage, and it is imperative to protect the environment. As one of the important channels for us to understand the environment, geography education is playing an increasingly important role in national education.By combing related literature,we find that there are problems such as monotonous teaching methods, single teaching resources, and lack of experiential learning in geography teaching. At the same time, geography is a discipline with many complex geographic elements. In geography teaching, teachers often need to show these complex geographic elements.Augmented reality technology has the characteristics of realistic situation creation and intuitive abstract thing display, which can improve these problems in geography teaching.Scholars in the field of educational technology have been working to introduce advanced information technology into teaching to improve teaching results. Therefore,in this context, this article intends to apply augmented reality technology to geography teaching and conduct empirical research.First, design learning activities based on activity theory and experiential learning theory.Combined with the general characteristics of augmented reality, analyze the characteristics of experiential learning activities supported by augmented reality, and build a junior high school geographic experience learning process based on augmented reality. Then,in accordance with the process proposed above, two cases of junior middle school geography “Earth Movement” and “Interpretation of Contour Topographic Maps” were designed and implemented in the junior middle school geography practical teaching. Finally, after the implementation of the case, students' learning effects and learning feedback are summarized through questionnaires and interviews. The results show:(1)Geography experience learning activities based on augmented reality have been positively evaluated by students in terms of learning experience, learning attitude, and learning effects.Students believe that this kind of learning activity can bring them a good learning experience, which can improve the learning effect of geography courses to a certain extent. If they like this kind of learning activity, they can stimulate their interest in learning.(2)Students are positive about the design of learning activities in research, and consider that the design of learning activities is reasonable.(3)In terms of the use of augmented reality tools, most students think that the augmented reality tools are helpful for their learning and can use the augmented reality tools autonomously and flexibly. However, some students have some difficulties in using the equipment.
