As an important driving force of the new round of technological revolution, artificial intelligence is bound to affect employment level in China. The application of new technologies will replace employment while creating new jobs, but the overall effect on employment is uncertain. In addition, considering the imbalance of regional development in China, there may be differences in the impact of AI on employment between developed and underdeveloped regions. Therefore, this paper studies the regional differences of the impact of artificial intelligence on employment. This article follows the idea of "theoretical mechanism-status analysis-empirical test-optimization measures" and compares and analyzes the differential impact of artificial intelligence on employment in developed and less developed regions.First,by combing the existing literature and related theories, this paper analyzes the substitution effect and creation effect of artificial intelligence on employment. The research on employment is divided into two aspects: total employment and employment structure, and constructs the mechanism of regional differences of artificial intelligence on employment.Secondly, using cluster analysis,China's 31 provinces are divided into developed and underdeveloped, and a comparative analysis of the development status of artificial intelligence and employment, which shows strong regional differences.Using random effects model to examine the regional differences in the impact of artificial intelligence on employment from 2003 to 2018 by Stata, and studying the policy options for the coordinated development of artificial intelligence and employment. The conclusion is as follows: Artificial intelligence in developed areas will promote employment, while artificial intelligence in underdeveloped areas will inhibit employment;in terms of employment structure, the development of artificial intelligence will increase employment in the secondary and tertiary industries and inhibit employment in the primary industry. The suppression effect of the primary industry and the promotion effect of the secondary industry and tertiary industry are stronger than those in the less developed regions.Education-oriented policies to promote the development of artificial intelligence have a strong role in promoting employment in underdeveloped areas, and scientific-oriented policies and technology-oriented policies have a strong role in promoting employment in developed areas. Finally, according to the conclusion of the study, the paper puts forward some suggestions on how to coordinate the development of artificial intelligence and employment, how to improve the total employment and how to optimize the employment structure. This paper creatively selects the regional differences as the research perspective, uses the cluster analysis method to divide the developed and underdeveloped areas, and adds the theoretical mechanism of the impact of artificial intelligence on employment, and comprehensively uses the comparative analysis method and the econometric analysis method to systematically analyze the regional differences of the impact of artificial intelligence on employment in China. However, there are some deficiencies in this paper, such as the incomplete analysis of employment structure and the lack of subdivision research on the underdeveloped areas, which need to be further refined and improved.
