In the new era,"an important foundation and engine that supports,promotes and leads the country's modernization development" has become the new coordinate and orientation of graduate education in China,which places higher requirements on postgraduates' innovation ability and performance.However,the current research shows that the innovation ability of postgraduates in China is insufficient,and the innovation performance still needs to be improved.Therefore,how to improve the postgraduates' innovation performance is an important issue that needs to be carefully considered in the new era.The supervisor is the first person responsible for postgraduate education,and supervisors' guidance has an important impact on postgraduates' innovation performance.Supervisors' guidance includes various responsibilities such as scientific research guidance,life guidance,psychological counseling,etc.The impact of different responsibilities on graduates' innovation performance and how the impact occurs are unknown.Therefore,this research focuses on scientific research guidance which is the core responsibility of the supervisors,aiming to explore the impact of the supervisors' scientific research guidance on postgraduates' innovation performance and reveal the influence mechanism behind it so as to provide theoretical and practical basis for improving the postgraduates' innovation performance and optimizing the supervisors' guidance.Based on the Job Demands-Resources Model,Resource Conservation Theory,and Leadership Situation Theory,this paper constructs a model of the influence mechanism of supervisors' scientific research guidance on postgraduates' innovation performance.To be specific,supervisors' scientific research guidance(independent variable),postgraduates' psychological capital(mediator variable)and postgraduates' innovation performance(dependent variable)are included in the model.Also,the postgraduates' academic ideal is involved as moderator variable.Then,the theoreticalmodel was tested empirically by questionnaire data from 400 graduate students in L University.The research conclusions are listed as follows: 1)supervisor-supported and supervisor-controlled scientific research guidance have a significant positive impact on postgraduates' innovation performance and psychological capital;2)postgraduates' psychological capital has a significant positive impact on innovation performance;3)postgraduates' psychological capital is the mediator variable between supervisor-supported research guidance and postgraduates' innovation performance.Also,postgraduates' psychological capital plays the same role between supervisor-controlled research guidance and postgraduates' innovation performance;4)the moderating role of postgraduates' academic ideal in supervisor-supported research guidance and postgraduates' innovation performance is not significant.However,postgraduates' academic ideal plays a significant moderating role in supervisor-controlled research guidance and postgraduates' innovation performance.Based on the research conclusions above,two ways are proposed in this paper to improve the postgraduates' innovation performance.On the one hand,it is necessary to develop and improve the scientific research guidance ability of supervisors.Specifically speaking,the following five requirements are included: 1)supervisors should clarify the guiding responsibilities and realize the importance of scientific research guidance;2)supervisors should properly give supportive and controlled scientific research guidance,especially to provide academic support to students;3)supervisors must teach students according to their aptitude so as to improve the effectiveness of the guidance;4)the appointment and assessment system of supervisors should be adjusted.Meanwhile,the importance of scientific research guidance in the evaluation system should be highlighted;5)supervisors' scientific research guidance ability can be strengthen by the professional development.On the other hand,it is essential to cultivate and enhance the postgraduates' psychological capital.To be specific,the following three requirements are needed: 1)supervisors should consider the cultivation and improvement of students' psychological capital as the starting point and destination of the supervisors' guidance;2)supervisors should give supportive guidance and avoid abusive guidance;3)postgraduates should work with their supervisors to strengthen psychological capital according to the development path of psychological capital.
