Heterogeneous Space: The Production Of Space And Its Micro Dynamic Mechanism In The Demolition And Resettlement Communities

With the accelerated developing of urbanization in China,large-scale population migration has occurred between urban and rural areas,and cities need a large number of communities to accommodate a growing population.At this time,the transformation of the old city and the land acquisition and demolition with the government as the leading force formed a group of demolition and resettlement communities,which not only turned the peasants into citizens,but also attracted a large number of floating populations,such as migrant workers and newly graduated students or the white collar.It is the different groups and individuals living in the demolition and resettlement community that jointly create the public space,relationship network and life style of the community.Then how is the spatial relationship of the demolition and resettlement community produced and what is its micro-dynamic mechanism?This paper takes the production of space as a theoretical perspective,discusses from the relationship of “space-actor”,uses the case study method,selects a demolition and resettlement community in Nanjing and analyzes the qualitative data by the method of narrative research.Research content includes: firstly,the formation process of demolition and resettlement space,secondly,the multivariate relationship in space and the producing diverse social space,finally,the main dynamic mechanism of space production.The conclusions of the study are as follows:(1)The formation process of physical space and social space in the demolition and resettlement community is under the top-down power of local governments,collective organizations and real estate developers.Individual actors take private interests as the main goal and use strategies and individual form of resistance.(2)Space has reshaped the interrelationship between internal groups,at the same time produced different social spaces: community space under grid management,power space based on housing property rights,self-organized budding living space,social organization creating public space,individualized and heterogeneous action space.(3)The micro-dynamic mechanism of space production is mainly the relationship and rules.The rules are based on the classification of spatial categories,including economic rational rules,democratic awareness rules,and daily negotiating rules.The relationship is based on tangible community space and can be divided into internal community relations and external community relations.(4)The fact that a large number of floating populations are concealed and disappeared into the above-mentioned various types of community space means that the current spatial functions of the demolition and resettlement communities are not able to meet their needs for social reproduction,and on the other hand,they are lack of internal relations and daily negotiation rules.(5)In the end,the paper proposes that the “heterogeneous space” of the demolition and resettlement community is a social space.The action takes space as the activity background,the object of competition and the important influencing factors.The actors have considerable heterogeneity and use both relationship and rules.The significance of the research is revealing the appearance of social life and relationship within the demolition and resettlement community,thus enriching the types of community research;promoting the study of urban space issues from the macro-policy level to the action level of micro-individuals;and providing a certain realistic basis for the community governance,human modernization and other issues.
