The realization of this translation report depends totally on a translation exercise. In 2014,under the supervision of Mme.CAD Danhong I started translating The Fantastic Tale in France in pairs, except this;we must also assume other responsibilities, such as,revision and correction. The text to be translated belongs to Western fantasy genre,is somewhat absent in the translation and research of Chinese literary world.Charles Nodier,in an article entitled From Fantasy literature, published in 1830,openly raised fantasy to its genre. This kind of literature opposing scientism, realism and rationalism, has had great success in France during the nineteenth centuries.Pierre-Georges Castex, one of the first great specialists of the fantasy, has selected and grouped the most distinguished fantastic works of many writers in the nineteenth century,The Fantastic Tale in France coming into being, which outlines the history of the fantasy genre in France and shows their particular literary characteristics who are characterized by specific deployment space, temporal concept, typology of characters and theme.Specifically,"Space" is represented by the strange atmosphere of codified places:the typical Western architecture and complicated religious scenes;"Time" by a disrupted chronology between story time and narrative time:the anachronism due to analepsis, interpolation resulting from the break and condensation owing to the iterative narrative;"The typology of characters" by a multitude of mythical human or non-human beings:monster, vampire, normal people immersed in the fantastic experience. With the combination of these three factors above, the fantasy wandering between the rational and the irrational, hence, the theme of ambivalence is finally set up.For Chinese readers, fantasy literature is more exotic because the spatial and temporal differences are so great between this Western genre and the Chinese literary genres, not forgetting the difference of ideas between our two peoples. The exoticism is staged in the scene.Faced to the exoticism of The Fantastic Tale in France,in general, the translator has two choices:one is the strategy of "domestication" contributes "to move the writer to the reader";the other is the strategy of "foreignization" aims "to move the reader to the writer." During the different phases of this translation exercise,I chose two different strategies. For the first version,I paid more attention to readability through many specific techniques such as "transformation","separation" and"addition".But throughout the process of revision and correction,I realized that the strategy of "domestication" resulted in some unfavorable effects:"transformation"leading to the clarification of mythical scenes;"Separation" causing the rationalization of disturbed time narrative and irrational characters;"Addition"resulting in the prolongation of the text and erasing the incessant style under an ambivalent theme of the original. These distorting effects led me to think about the issues of strangeness and its reproduction in translation. So,in the corrected version,I replaced the "transformation","separation" and "addition" by the "non-transformation","non-separation" and "non-addition",in the direction of the"foreignization" strategy. In fact, the translation is translating the exoticism.Consequently,in order to show the process of translation processes mentioned above, this report has the objective to study the factors of strangeness and reproduction in translation.Regarding the issues of strangeness, referring to theories on translation of Antoine Berman and Xu Jun,this report stars with the researches of the truth of the strangeness, pursued by analyzing the factors of The Fantastic Tale in France, ends up thinking about the principle and technics of the strategy"foreignization" who gives us a credible choice for the translation when we face to similar texts.Basically, this translation report consists of three parts:the exoticism of fantasy, the two different treatments of the exoticism, the principle and techniques of reproducing the exoticism. The first part explains the exotic traits and their representations in language of The Fantastic Tale in France.Based on the researches of Tzvetan Todorov and Valerie Tritter,I realized that for the fantastic to be realized,it must find a specific space,a specific temporal concept,a specific typology of characters and a specific theme.Meanwhile, the exotic traits of the fantasy will realize only by specific linguistic features. So,it's natural to combine the exotic features with language characters and analyze them together. The second part begins by listing two different treatments facing to the exoticism. And analyze their different trends on the level of vocabulary, syntax and logic of the text original,in the base of the theory of translation Berman. This part ends up illuminating the importance of "foreignization" strategy in the field of literary translation, which assumes the role of reproducing the exoticism in the target language. In the end, thanks to the analytic of translation of Antoine Berman, the third party could get rid of subjective feelings and empirical, and raise up to the synthesis of principle and technics of the strategy "foreignization" from the simple analysis of different treatments.By using "no-clarification","no-rationalization" and"no-prolongation",the translator can keep the irrational fact, indecisive color and stylistic discourse of the original, with the objective of opening a way positive to reproduce the exoticism of literary works.
