The Balance Of Exoticism And Acceptability In Drama Translation

Translation is an effective form of different cultures to make communication,and the process of translation to some extent is the process of conveying the cultures.Language and culture are two important elements that should be considered in translation.Fluent in language and cultural transmission are the basic requirements of literary translation.Therefore,drama translation has the same highly requirement in smoothness of language and heterogeneity of culture.Drama translation is different from other types of literary translation,and has higher requirements for the translators compared to other literary forms.Two elements should be considered by translator in the process of drama translation.That is the principle of ?exoticism? and ?acceptability?.As the final purpose of drama translation for service of performing,translator should translate the dramatic text into readable and performable text in target language culture.In view of the feature of drama,drama translator has a hard task in the process of translation,because he or she not only should be faithful to the original works but also should retain the cultural foreignness of original text in the aspect of culture.In light of the permeability of drama,translator should conform to the target language readers‘ or audiences‘ habit of language.However,translators are always confined to a dilemma of keeping exoticism which leads to obscure language and of observing the principle of acceptability which results in the loss of original cultural characteristics.This is about the issue of balance between exoticism and acceptability.The research takes to the two translation strategies of domestication and foreignization as the theoretical framework,and then analyzes two Chinese versions of Eugene O‘Neill‘s Beyond the Horizon from the perspective of language and culture.Also,the author states how the two translators reflect the balance of exoticism and acceptability in their versions and what the translation strategy they applied in the course of their translation.
