Almost all language learning consists of five parts:listening,speaking,reading,writing and translation,among which reading is the most important.What's more,reading is the basic way to acquire language knowledge.Therefore,English reading ability is very important.All the time the focus of domestic scholars' research is how to improve students' English reading ability.With the introduction of foreign related theories and research results,domestic scholars began to pay attention to the influence of emotional factors on English reading ability.Anxiety is the most prominent emotional factor.Up to now,most of the researches on the effect of anxiety on English reading ability are conducted among college students,senior high school students and junior high school students,but few of them involve secondary vocational students.Therefore,the author attempts to study the effects of anxiety on English reading ability of secondary vocational school students,explore the causes of reading anxiety,and explore the coping strategies to alleviate anxiety.This study investigates 362 students of three grades in Rugao Secondary Professional School through questionnaires,interviews and English reading tests.Subsequently,98 students in the high anxiety group were selected and divided into the control group and the experiment group.49 students in the experiment group were given reading intervention for 8 weeks,while the other 49 students in the control group only received normal teaching.The data were analyzed by SPSS 22.0 software package,including reliability assessment,descriptive analysis,and comparison of means and Pearson correlation analysis and so on.The conclusions are as follows:(1)English reading anxiety is a common problem among secondary vocational students.There is no significant difference between male and female students.(2)With the increase of grade,students' English reading anxiety level is increasing.(3)The reading anxiety level of students who believe that English is useful for their career development is significantly lower than those who do not believe that English is useful for their career development.(4)The evaluation on the difficulty in English assessment reflects the level of students'self-confidence in English learning.With the increase of self-confidence,the level of students'reading anxiety gradually.decreases.(5)Students' English reading anxiety level and their English reading grades have a negative correlation.That is to say,the students who have higher level of English reading anxiety tend to get lower English reading grades.English reading anxiety level is negatively related to reading patterns grades.And the patterns of inferring and choosing main ideas are the most obvious.(6)The main sources that cause reading anxiety among the students in Secondary vocational school are lack of confidence,lack of interest in reading,not enough vocabulary,lack of strategies in English reading,not knowing too much about foreign countries' culture,insufficient attention to English.(7)Intervention in three stages of English reading(pre-reading stage,mid-reading stage and post-reading stage)and five aspects(self-confidence,reading interest,basic knowledge,reading strategies and English culture)can help to alleviate the reading anxiety level of students and improve their English reading ability.
