Research On The Translation Of Triathlon Terms From The Perspective Of ESP Theory

Triathlon is a kind of mixed sport composed of swimming,cycling and running.It originated from abroad,and its development history in China is not quite long.However,now in China,with the emphasis on sports and the development of this sport itself,the whole process from development,popularization to improvement of this sport has shown great demand for learning advanced experience from abroad and international communication.Since the official language of the International Triathlon Union(ITU)competition is English,the translation is the bridge of cultural communication between English and Chinese,also and the term is the focus of cultural communication.Therefore,the translation of triathlon terms comes into being,and the importance of term translation is self-evident.Now in China,the development of triathlon is still at the initial development stage,throughout the whole domestic researches of triathlon sport at present,most researches have focused on the origin,development process,present situation,the characteristics of this sport and athletes.But there is no any research themes on the sport terminology and terminology translation.As a kind of language symbol,terminology is not only the carrier of related concepts of a subject,but also the basis of academic research,discussion and communication of this subject.While there exists some wrong translation and inappropriate translation,which will cause bigger obstacles to the development and improvement of this sport,and the development of triathlon in China needs more accurate and efficient international exchange and communication study,therefore,as the bridge of communication and study,the translation of triathlon terminology must be accurate and efficient.In this paper,literature,logic analysis,case analysis research methods are used to organize and analyse the relevant terminology translation that has been collected in many ways,it shows some characteristics of triathlon terms,which are various,particularity,so many acronyms and combination words.And based on the concept of ESP theory,also in accordance with the different purposes and the range of application of the terms,all the terms could be divided into the following several big categories: relevant organizations and bodies,events and categories,sport disciplines,events operation,staff and positions,venues and courses,competition equipment,daily training and so on,and some categories contain several subcategories.Based on the collection and case analysis,this paper concludes that the main translation methods used in the translation of triathlon terms are literal translation,free translation,zero translation,annotation translation and supplement translation.At present in China,there are some terminology inconsistency and misinterpretation phenomena exist in the translation of triathlon rules.Finally,the author suggested that to choose different translation methods under the guidance of ESP theory and according to the specific purpose and use of the terms,the translation of the related terms and rules of triathlon could be more accurate and effective,so that can better help the sports discussion and communication and to speed up the triathlon improvement process of learning and development,and to promote the development of the triathlon in China.
