The United States and the European Union have launched several economic sanctions against Russia since 2014,which have not been lifted. The thesis will see the US and the EU as joint initiators and compare the case with historical cases. It is hoped that the analyzing of the disagreements between the US and the EU on sanctions can help develop future counter-measures in similar situations. The thesis will try to answer the following question: among the factors that may affect the result of economic sanctions, how do the disagreements between the US and the EU affect the result of the sanctions against Russia? It is divided in three parts: the first chapter analyzes the background of the US and the EU's economic sanctions against Russia, and sorts out the process of economic sanctions in three phases. The second chapter summarizes the characteristics of the joint sanctions of the US and the EU through the historical cases, and analyzes the variables of the Russian case on the basis of that. The third chapter focuses on the differences in political and economic areas between the US and the EU in the economic sanctions against Russia, analyzes the impact of the disagreements between the US and the EU on economic sanctions, and summarizes the result of economic sanctions against Russia. The thesis concludes that the US-EU economic sanctions against Russia are mainly affected by goals of sanctions, ways of sanctions,Russia's political and economic conditions,Russia's economic relations with the US and the EU,international support, and the disagreements between the US and the EU on economic sanctions, with the last one being the most influential factor. The United States has played a leading role in economic sanctions, and the EU has been more cautious about the sanctions. The US' tough sanctions harmed Russia's economy, but at the same time caused damage to its European allies, which has widened the disagreements and the joint sanctions can be seen as unsuccessful.
