OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY The aim of this study is to give an overview of the current status of business model innovation(BMI)literature and derive the barriers and drivers related to the carsharing industry. The process of creating BMIs has not been discussed to any broad extent in the literature, and the success factors to BMI described in the literature are of a very generic and abstract nature. The aim of this study is to identify the concrete drivers that lead to the great success of Daimlers BMIs Car2 Go and Turo(former Croove).By analyzing these two BMIs of Daimler with different characteristics, the study aims to identify both industry-specific as well as universal success factors to BMI,in order to bring some valuable insight to academics and practitioners alike.RESEARCH METHOD This is a qualitative study. The study includes an extensive literature review analyzing over 70 relevant English,peer-reviewed journal articles as well as a qualitative case study of Daimler and its two very successful BMIs.Analysis of the data resulted in insight into both the BMI concept and the barriers and drivers of BMI in the car sharing industry. The results were then compared to those suggested in the literature.FINDINGS The study contributes to developments of the theory,as well as managerial and theoretical implications and further research suggestions. The theoretical contributions include identifying universal,as well as industry-specific success factors to BMI.The universal barriers and enablers are compared to those suggested in the literature, and some additions are suggested. For practitioners, the study brings insight into the concrete enablers of BMI and suggests some organizational best practices to implement BMI successfully and understand important interrelations.
