This study takes the sustainable development of natural ecosystems and the maximization of human welfare as the basic starting point, and carries out the temporal and spatial evolution characteristics,multi-functional evaluation and identification, driving factors an d mechanism analysis, optimization schemes and functional zone zoning policies of rural regional functions. The study is divided into four parts,as follows:Firstly, this study evaluates the characteristics of rural regional functions using panel data during the rapid urbanization process from 1990 to 2017 in the Jinan metropolitan area. From a time perspective, there is a rapid growth trend in the total value of rural regional functions in the Jinan metropolitan area, from 63.601 billion yuan to 1392.969 billion yuan, and there is an increase of about 22 times in industrial development functions, which always occupied a dominant position. From a space perspective,in terms of exploratory data analysis with Geo Da in this study, the Moran index of the four types of regional functions is positive, and the spatial agglomeration of e cological conservation functions is the strongest.Secondly, this study establishes relevant indicators and uses Matlab to run the entropy method to comprehensively evaluate and ident ify rural multi-functions,which are divided into four types: single area function, dual composite function, weak comprehensive type, and strong comprehensive type.In 27 years, the ecological-dominated type has shown an upward trend in 46 research units, while the agricultural-dominated type has shown a downward trend.Industrial development functions and social security functions have tended to develop in tandem.Regional functions have changed drastically, but the proportion of strong comprehensive types has shown a downward trend in fluctuations, indicating that regional differences in regional functions have decreased and rural regional functions have become more balanced.Thirdly, according to the evaluation results, this study selects three modles named Ordinary Least Squares Model,Geographically Weighted Regression Model, and Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression Model to analyze for driving factors.Besides driving factors contains in seven aspects: economic society, internal linkage de gree, external linkage degree, ecological protection, agricultural production, financial support, and natural environment. The study finds that economic and social factors have the greatest impact on the types of rural regional functions, followed by natur al environmental factors. Finally, this study combines the main function zoning scheme and the Minimum Cumulative Resistance Model to constrain the development of rural regional functions in the study area from five areas: restricted development zones, restricted development zones, rational planning zones, coordinated development zones, and priority remediation zones. The study f inds that restricted development zones accounted for the highest proportion of ecological land(34.56%),ecoordinated development zones accounted for the highest proportion of living land(34.62%),and rational planning zones accounted for 4.04 % which had the most development potential.
