Abstract/Summary:
Despite the change in nuclear medicine technology (NMT), the education and preparation of technologists ranges in length from 1 to 4 years. There has been little effort to modify training programs for more complex imaging procedures. The purpose of this study is to conduct a gap analysis to determine the current levels of education and how technologists report their educational needs for future skill and performance. Participants identified that the biggest change in their environment was new technology in equipment. Actually, 53% of NMT's indicated that further training was necessary. Nearly 20% indicated they will need CT training, 38% would require PET/CT, 13% indicated SPECT/CT and 3% needed MRI training. To include this new material an entry level baccalaureate degree is necessary.
