Abstract/Summary:
This study examines the semiotics that occur in play settings which do not fall conveniently into the heretofore accepted dichotomy of classifications as either "interior" or "exterior." The study proposes that just as with the architectural elements which are portrayed on stage there is a third possibility, Intermediate Space, which is not entirely interior or exterior. This study examines Intermediate Space in seven contemporary American playscripts: (1) Mornings at Seven, by Paul Osborn; (2) I'm Herbert, by Robert Anderson; (3) The 5th of July, by Lanford Wilson; (4) Talley's Folly, by Lanford Wilson; (5) Laundry and Bourbon, by James McLure; (6) Fences , by August Wilson; (7) Proof, by David Auborn.
