Abstract/Summary:
Peer cruelty, disrespect and substance abuse are rising among our youth of today. By teaching values and virtues, youth will be given the skills to think and act appropriately. This study examined the leadership practices required to support and sustain staff in moral education programming in a middle school. This research allowed Nelson Heights Middle School staff to apply their mission and belief statements. This learning may also be used in other schools. The focus was on informal learning utilizing strategies from current leading researchers in character education and in leadership development. An action research inquiry approach including interviews, questionnaire and a focus group was used to collect data. Study findings indicate that vision, common program components, leadership capacity, collaborating, celebrating and supporting change are effective leadership practices.
