Abstract/Summary:
Globally applicable principles of sustainable development are identified, explained, and interpreted for their relevance to urban neighborhood design. The principles are filtered to exclude those that are not applicable at the neighborhood scale. The selected principles are then interpreted for application to urban neighborhoods. Planning and design guidelines that support the principles are identified from existing concepts in neighborhood design, modified for application in an existing urban context, or newly formulated where necessary.; The neighborhood of Middle East in Baltimore, MD serves as the site for a design project incorporating the proposed guidelines. The project demonstrates a systematic application of the design guidelines to the greatest extent afforded by the existing neighborhood context.; Both the existing neighborhood and the proposed design are evaluated for the presence of each guideline. Any conflicts encountered in the design application are identified, and the feasibility of implementing the guidelines is discussed. Changes and improvements to the guidelines are offered as needed.; Finally, the professional relevance of the study products is discussed, and important areas for future research are suggested.
