Abstract/Summary:
The purpose of this thesis is to provide an answer to Mark Sainsbury's critique of dialetheism. Specifically, three of Sainsbury's doctrines are answered: SLP (Sainsbury's Logic of Propositions), SLB (Sainsbury's Logic of Belief), and SRT (Sainsbury's Rationality Thesis). In the initial part, the logical foundations of paraconsistency and the areas of contention are presented. In the latter part, logical commitments and answering problem areas are tackled. Specifically, by proposing semantic closure as acceptable evidence for an inconsistent linguistic structure, paraconsistency as the underlying logical theory is vindicated. The preceding arguments point towards the conclusion that it is rational to have and to believe inconsistent and contradictory propositions under specific conditions, especially when semantic closure warrants it. Thus, Sainsbury is answered on all three of his doctrines.
