Abstract/Summary:
The preponderance of analysis of relations between the Tejano, or Mexican and Spanish-ancestry residents of the Republic of Texas and Anglo, or white immigrant communities has concentrated on only a few elements. These normally include Anglo racism and greed, and Tejano fear and conservatism. This has created a model which is simple, but which overlooks other important factors driving relations between the two groups.;The thesis draws both on modern histories of the period and on contemporaneous newspaper reports, commentary, official publications, letters and statements which may more accurately reflect the state of mind of the persons noted.;This thesis calls attention to several of these factors, including actions taken by both communities and the reactions and comments these actions provoked. It also offers an alternative to strict colonialist analysis of intergroup relations; one in which responsibility for conflict is shared, and in which external factors loom large.
