| The purposes of this study were to develop a valid, reliable instrument and to use the instrument to collect the data needed to describe and analyze the methods of sports equipment inventory control among college and university physical education departments. More specifically, the study identified the methods utilized by physical education departments in determining needs, inventorying, purchasing, receiving, marking, issuing and maintaining equipment. The single hypothesis of the study, there will be no difference in the responses to at least 70% of the 51 questionnaire items between the two administrations of the instrument to physical education department chairpersons, was supported as 37 (72.6%) of the 51 items were found to be reliable.;A panel of experts was used to verify the content validity of the questionnaire. Test-retest reliability was determined by twice sending the questionnaire to department chairs at 140 randomly selected colleges and universities with majors in physical education.;Department chairpersons at 400 randomly selected colleges and universities received the questionnaire, and 162 questionnaires (40.5%) were returned. The following profile was developed from the largest frequency response to each question.;The physical education equipment is housed/stored and issued from the same room/area/window(s) as other departments' sports equipment. Administrators are responsible for determining the amounts of the annual budget for equipment.;Control of the sports equipment is the responsibility of a full-time or part-time equipment manager who's assisted by one to four students. The equipment manager supervises the issuing of equipment and the control of the inventory which is taken once a year.;Faculty and students of the college/university must surrender a college/university picture identification card to borrow equipment. When the borrowed items are returned, the collateral is returned, and the borrower's name is cleared.
