With the increasing trend of green environmental protection, the emerging industries related to the application of new energy are gradually emerging all over the world. Now the United States,Japan and many countries in Europe have promoted the transformation of electric vehicles,China and some other emerging economies are also actively developing new energy vehicles. After nearly 20 years of planning and cultivation, the production capacity and market scale of China’s new energy vehicle industry have increased significantly.Since 2015,the production, sales and holdings of China’s new energy vehicles have been the highest around the world.Meanwhile,China has also accumulated certain technological achievements and gradually improved relevant infrastructure. However,in the face of fierce competition in the international market, the international competitiveness of China’s new energy vehicles still needs to be improved. At present, domestic new energy vehicles are still dominated by domestic consumption, and some core components have not been independently developed and produced.Consequently,it is of vital practical significance to study the development status and understand the international competitive position of China’s new energy automobile industry for the selection and adjustment of national industrial strategy. This paper analyzes the development status and international competitive position of China’s new energy vehicle industry. This paper first sorts out the research results and correlation theoretical basis of China’s new energy vehicle industry. Then it analyzes the industrial development characteristics and trends in China,Europe, the United States and Japan, and summarizes the development status and problems of China’s industry. In addition, the international competitiveness of China’s new energy passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle industry is measured and analyzed by four dimensions of indicators(IMS,TC,RCA,CA),the total factor productivity of the representative firms in each country is measured by the DEA-Malmquist index. Finally, the paper explores the correlative influencing factors by means of diamond model, and focuses on the impact analysis of government policies and technological innovation. This study found that China’s new energy vehicle industry has international leading advantages in terms of market size, power battery technology and charging infrastructure construction. At the same time, there are also problems such as insufficient domestic market share of new energy vehicles and dependence on imports of some core parts and raw materials. From the perspective of relevant indicators of international competitiveness, the international competitiveness of China’s new energy commercial vehicle industry is in the leading position in the world, while passenger vehicle industry,on the contrary,is relatively weak in international competitiveness. As for total factor productivity competitiveness,China has been lower than the United States,Europe and Japan since 2016.In terms of influencing factors,A series of policies of the Chinese government have greatly guided and promoted the development of the industry. In addition,China’s technological innovation ability in the direction of pure electric vehicles is in the leading position in the world, while its technical ability in the direction of hybrid electric vehicles and fuel cell vehicles still needs to be improved. At last, this paper raises policy proposals on how to improve the international competitiveness of China’s new energy vehicle industry, including optimizing instructive policies to increase sales in market segments, enhancing the capacity for technological innovation, improving the industrial ecology and promoting industrial collaboration, continuing to optimize the infrastructure environment, deepening the opening up and cooperation, and introducing talents.
