“characters” and “words” are two basic language teaching units for teaching Chinese characters to foreigners.However,in the past development of teaching Chinese characters to foreigners,“characters”and “words” were artificially separated.The teaching of Chinese characters to foreigners,guided by the absolute character-based teaching method,regards Chinese characters as the basic unit of teaching.But in verbal communication,words are the smallest unit of language that can be used independently.Guided by the word-based teaching method,teaching Chinese as a foreign language treats words as the basic unit of teaching,but it ignores the particularity of Chinese.Therefore,neither the word-based teaching method nor the word-based teaching method can handle the relationship between characters and words well.This leads to the increase in literacy of foreign students after they have learned Chinese characters,but they are unable to make use of the learned Chinese characters.And whether beginner or intermediate,both of them have this problem.In order to solve this problem,under the guidance of Mr.Bellassen’s dualism of Chinese teaching,based on the root word formula of Han Zhigang,Tianjin University,the author carried out teaching experiments for intermediate.In order to help them clarify the relationship of characters and words and expand the amount of words on the basis of understanding the basic characteristics of Chinese characters.The experimental results prove that the word expansion teaching based on the root word method method can help learners to improve their ability to expand words,and can also stimulate learners’ interest in Chinese character learning.This research is based on classroom teaching and closely combines the study of Chinese characters with the practice of teaching Chinese as a foreign language.In addition,this teaching experiment is a practice based on the existing research results of the root-word method,which can provide a reference for the follow-up research of the root-word method.
