The text of Race & Economics,written by Walter E.Williams,is a result of a number of years gathering research materials,writing,and letting the manuscript sit.The author’s purpose in writing this book is to apply simple economic analysis to some of the problems that African Americans faced in the past and still face today to show that free-market resource allocation,as opposed to political allocation,is in the best interests of minorities.The translator believes that this book will give Chinese readers a new perspective to look at the racial issues in the US,and help them understand the complex relationship between race and economics.The source text of this translation is Chapters 4 and 5 of Race & Economics,which mainly introduces such subjects as wage regulations,licensing laws,and unions,and demonstrates their harms to blacks through historical examples and lucid logic.In this translation practice,the translator takes Newmark’s Text Typology as the guiding theory to analyze and translate the source text,and uses semantic translation and communicative translation as the main strategies to complete the translation and summarizes some practical translation methods and techniques for the translation of special names,nominalization,and passive sentences.This report is divided into five parts.The first part is an introduction to the project,which includes the background of the source text and significance of the translation task.The second part introduces the implementation process of the translation practice.The third part describes the translation theory adopted in the case studies.The fourth part discusses how the translator uses translation skills and methods,such as transliteration,shift,omission,addition etc.to solve the translation difficulties under the guidance of the semantic and communicative translation strategies.The last part summarizes the experiences and limitations of this translation practice.
