A Report On E-C Translation Of Chapter Three Of Discourse And Power In A Multilingual World

The original text selected for the translation practice is the third chapter in Discourse and Power in a Multilingual World.This book explores the subtle relationship between discourse,power,and ideology in a multilingual world by analyzing the discourse content of laws and regulations,news media,newspapers,editorials and public speeches.Chapter three takes the multiculturalism and multilingualism in Britain as the background,describing the political status of minority languages and their speakers in Britain and expounding how languages show the power when immigrant countries set policies and regulations.The original text involves a lot of terminologies,compound sentence structures and long sentences.How to deal with those languages features to convey the information of the original into the target language in a decent and complete way is the major challenge and difficulty in the process of translation.In order to cope with the above-mentioned problems,the reporter primarily refers to Tytler’s three principles of translation as the guiding theory,the essence of which is characterized as complete information,consistent style and manner and smoothness and naturalness.Under the guidance of the these principles,the reporter applies some translation strategies in an attempt to render the abstract words,terminologies,long sentences and obscure expressions in the original text into proper Chinese as they could best be.The report also probes into the cruxes and solutions in the translation of informative texts to ensure that readers of both languages will get the same information and reading experience to the greatest extent possible.The report is divided into five parts.The first part is an introduction,which makes a mention of the research significance,the report structure,the original text and its author;the second part is a literature review of the research status on Tytler’s three principles as well as on informative texts translation in recent years;the third part expounds the three principles in detail to shed light on their functions in guiding translation practice;the fourth part presents case studies to illustrate how these principles inspire the translator to get to the right points;the fifth part sums up the gains and limitations of the translation practice and wraps up the takeaways for future practice.
