The source text of this translation report is selected from "Talking about Chinese" written by Yi Zhongtian. The book is one of the six books from the series of"Yi Zhongtian Savoring China",which describes common daily phenomena with popular and brief language in order to find the inherent cultural connotations.Considering that with the increasingly frequent exchanges between different countries, people are becoming more and more interested in Chinese culture, and their desire to understand Chinese culture has become stronger and stronger,so the author of this report chooses this book as the source text, hoping to increasing the knowledge and recognition of target readers towards Chinese culture, hence to improve the communication of Chinese culture.According to the "5W" model proposed by the communication theorist Lasswell, communication process can be summarized as the communicator conveys communication content to the audience through certain communication media, thus to get corresponding communication effect, which comprehensively covers the main elements in the communication process. The "5W" model that focuses on the communication process and effect could offer great enlightenment for exploring the effect of cultural communication.Since the source text aims to explore the deep cultural connotations from describing common phenomena, the appearance of a large number of culture-loaded words with Chinese characteristics poses a great challenge to the translation work.Based on the above, this thesis, under the guidance of communication studies, pays great attention to the C-E translation of culture-loaded words in the first and second chapter from Yi Zhongtian’s book "Talking about Chinese",and explores how to maximize the communication effect of Chinese culture.Through the content analysis,a concrete collection and classification of the culture-loaded words in the source text is given. It’s found that three types of culture-loaded words are frequently used in it,they are respectively linguistic culture-loaded words, social culture-loaded words and material culture-loaded words. In view of the features of culture-loaded words and the theory’s applicability to the translation materials, this article proposes three guiding principles from the perspective of communication studies, namely to emphasize the subjectivity of the communicator,to emphasize the acceptability of the audience and to emphasize the communication effect.Firstly, emphasizing the subjectivity of the translator is reflected in the aspect that the translator flexibly adjusts the translation method according to different contents. For information that need to be added, she adopts the method of annotation and addition, for information that are redundant, she deletes them.Secondly, emphasizing the acceptability of the audience can be found expression in the aspect that the translator fully considers the differences in cultural backgrounds and language habits between China and western countries, she always puts herself in the target readers’ place and then adopts such methods as substitution and free translation. Finally, emphasizing the communication effect is embodied in the aspect that the translator,in order to make target readers get the same information, have the same reading feelings as the source readers and avoid the possible cultural default, flexibly uses the method of transliteration plus annotation and literal translation to maximize the communication effect. This thesis, from the perspective of communication studies, through listing and analyzing a large number of examples, aims to explore the effective translation principles that are applied in the translation of culture-loaded words in "Talking about Chinese "(excerpt)and feasible translation methods in order to maximize communication effect.,hoping to provide some inspiration and reference for the research and translation of texts about Chinese culture.
