A Report On Consecutive Interpreting For Chengdu Innovation And Entrepreneurship Week 2018

With Chengdu’s ever-growing economic and trade cooperation and exchanges with the world,Chengdu today has become one of the most innovative cities in China,bringing huge market demand to the language service industry in Chengdu,especially the translation and interpretation industry.Chengdu Innovation and Entrepreneurship Week 2018 was held in Chengdu from October 9 to 15,2018.The author was entrusted by a translation company to work as a consecutive interpreter for a lecture of Chengdu Innovation and Entrepreneurship Week 2018.Interpretive theory holds that the aim of the interpreting activity is not to seek the correspondence of words or sentences but an equivalence of meaning.In this regard,interpreters should highlight the extraction and expression of meaning instead of being limited to the original linguistic form.According to the Paris school of the interpretive theory,interpreting involving a process of comprehension,deverbalization and reformulation is of great guiding significance to interpreters’ interpreting practice.This practice report is based on the consecutive interpreting for Chengdu Innovation and Entrepreneurship Week 2018.In this report,case study is carried out from the perspective of the interpretive theory to explore the interpreting difficulties the author encountered and their coping strategies.Interpreting difficulties are summed up as redundancy of source language,culture-loaded words,accent and logical barriers,and their coping strategies are concluded as omission,amplification,adaption and coherence,accordingly.Evidence from the analysis of typical cases showed that these four coping strategies guided by the interpretive theory can help the author solve the difficulties during interpreting,achieving the effective delivery of the speaker’s intention and idea and improving the quality of interpretation.It is worth noticing that the author’s biggest challenge in interpreting is the speaker’s Cantonese accent,which has a great influence on the “deverbalization” of the source language.This report gives an overall review of the whole process of interpreting practice.Through case study and post-interpreting summary,the author puts forward some suggestions,such as strengthening theoretical studies on oral interpretation,improving the familiarity with different accents,allocating efforts in an appropriate way and accumulating interpretation experience.The author hopes that this report can provide some corpus value for those who engage in the study of interpreting.
