A Report On C-E Translation Of A Paper On Geological Engineering

With the rapid globalization,global information exchange springs up in our daily life,which requires high level information exchange in Chinese-English translation.At the same time,the Chinese-English translation of geoscience plays an important role in the analysis and research of global geological exploration data.As we all know,geoscience articles not only make the most faithful description of the current geological exploration situation,but also provide other geological researchers with authentic and reliable data.However,although the geoscience research is increasing in the importance,the quality of its translation needs to be improved.The translated geological text with high quality can not only reduce barriers in language communication,but also greatly improve the efficiency of data research.This report is written on the basis of the Chinese-English translation of the source text titled “The tectonic stress field adjacent to the source of the 2017 Jinghe MS 6.6earthquake and slip property of its seismogenic fault”.The translator takes Newmark’s text typology theory as the guiding theory and classifies the source text as the informative text.Thus,the semantic translation is taken as the translation strategy of this translation.The translator makes a detailed translation plan based on the content of the source text and the deadline of the entrusting party.She establishes the parallel texts and uses them to make the glossary terms.Based on the semantic translation,to improve the translation quality,the translator translates the source text by translation skills as transliteration,zero-translation,class shift,combination,amplification and omission as well as voice transformation.Based on the semantic translation,the translator discusses typical translation difficulties based on these translation skills and makes analyses in chapter four.In the whole process of translation,the translator pays great attention to the quality control and tries to increase the understandability of the target text by analyzing the different ways of expressions in Chinese and English language.After translation,the translator improves her translation quality by reviewing the translation,drawing lessons from one peer,and getting evaluation from the entrusting party.Thus,in chapter five,the translator discusses what she learned in the translation task such as her improved translation ability,the increased relevant knowledge of geoscience,the way to establish parallel texts for reference and how to apply the translation theory in translation practice.Finally,the translator makes a summary of the difficulties she has met and proposes what she will do in future.She also states what she has learned in this translation practice and limitation for future studies.She hopes that this translation report can provide some reference for other geological report translation.
